1354 AH: Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri
Syed Jalaluddin Umri (السيّد جلال الدین عمری) Born in 1935 is the present Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and serving the third term. He is an eminent Islam intellectual, author, educationalist, and reform leader in India. He has authored more than thirty books and umpteen number of research articles on diverse subjects with Islamic perspective. Among the Islami circles, he is considered an authority on human rights in general, and women and Islami family system in particular.
Personal Biography
Born in a village in North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu in 1935 Received early education in the village school. Later joined Jamia Darussalam Umerabad for Arabic education from where completed his ‘Fazeelat’ course in 1954. Appeared for various examinations of the University of Madras and obtained the degree of ‘Munshi Fazil’ in Persian Language and Literature. Passed B.A. (English Honours) examination from Aligarh Muslim University. After the completion of studies at Umerabad, came to Rampur which was then a centre of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and associated himself with its Department of Research and Writing In 1970, this department was shifted to Aligarh and after a decade it was assigned to an autonomous society called “Idara-e- Tahqeeqate-o- Tasneef -e- Islami” in 1981. Maualana Jalaluddin Umri Sahab was its secretary right from its inception till 2001 and now the President. He is also the editor of its renowned quarterly journal “Taheqeeqate-Islami “. This journal is published regularly since 1982. In the literary circles it is viewed in high esteem. It is given weightage and importance.
Socio-Political Activism
Maolana Jalaluddin Umri Sahab has been associated actively with many social, religious and political organisations in India in pursuit of the policies of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.
- President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, a movement active for the establishment of Peace in the country. He was its Vice-President since 1991 and became President in 2007.
- Founding member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, a federation of Muslim organisations in India.
- Chairman, Idara-e-Tahqeeq wa Tasneef-e-Islami Aligarh, an Islamic Research Institute, and Editor of its journal Tahqeeqat-e-Islami. Chancellor, Jamaiat-ul-Falah, an Islamic University based in northern India.

1356 AH (1946) – Maulana Fazlur Rahman Azmi
Shaykh al-Hadith Fazlur Rahman Azmi was born in 1356/1946 in Maunath Bhanjan (Mau), Uttar Pradesh, India. After memorizing the Qur’an at an early age by his father, Shaykh Hafiz al-Rahman Azmi, Shaykh al-Hadith embarked on an intensive period of studying during which he mastered Arabic, Persian and Urdu.
Upon completion of the rigorous Shari’ah program (‘alim course) at Madrasah Miftah al-‘Ulum, Mau in the traditional Islamic sciences, he studied the various modes of Qur’anic recitation (qira’ah),thereafter specializing in hadith and answering legal questions (ifta) under the great scholar of hadith,Shaykh Habib al-Rahman Azmi. Shaykh al-Hadith’s illustrious teaching career began in his home town of Mau. On the advice of his teacher he moved to Madrasah Mazhar al-‘Ulum, Varanasi where he taught for four years. In 1395/1975 he moved to the renowned seminary, Jami’ah Islamiyyah Dabhel, Gujarat where he taught the major books of tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), hadith, fiqh (Islamic law) and qira’ah.
In 1406/1986 he was invited to Madrasah Arabia Islamia, Azaadville, South Africa and was offered the post of Shaykh al-Hadith (‘Senior Lecturer of hadith’). To date he has been teaching Sahihal-Bukhari, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Mishkat al-Masabih and other major books at this institute. Shaykh al-Hadith is a prolific writer and has authored over forty books. His most famous works include introductions to Sahih al-Bukhari and Sunan al-Tirmidhi. He has also been active in the field of da’wahand tablighand has benefited many as a distinguished disciple (khalifah) of Shah Hakim Muhammad AkhtarSaheb (R.A) in the field of spiritual reformation (tazkiyah)
